A plastic surgeon is trained in the specialty of improving facial and body defects as well as the ability to cosmetically enhance well-functioning structures. Plastic surgeons are versed in the principles of function, symmetry, proportion, and aesthetics, employing this knowledge to restore or improve the appearance and internal processes of anatomic systems. While their work commonly consists of anti-aging, body contouring, and augmentation procedures, plastic surgeons can also offer operations pertaining to trauma care, cosmetic restoration after cancer removal surgery, and the reparation of congenital deformities (birth defects). Plastic surgeons who work primarily in the cosmetic realm typically undergo additional training requirements for face and breast surgery, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), and liposuction, among other aesthetic procedures.
As with any medical procedure, plastic surgery involves a risk of complication that you should feel confident knowing your surgeon has the experience and intuition to properly address. When your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons (ABPS), you can feel confident that he or she has completed rigorous education and training beyond the minimum requirements to practice plastic surgery. This certification speaks to their competence in skill, experience, safety, ethical conduct, and dedication to their craft— principles which are essential to entrusting a plastic surgeon with your care.
