Tummy Tuck Scars

Potential scarring is a common concern patients often have when considering tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty). How long and/or noticeable will my scar be? Will my scar be visible when I wear a bikini? Is there anything I can do to minimize the appearance of scarring? These are all questions I frequently hear from patients at my practice, and though the answers to these inquiries will vary based on the individual’s specific goals and/or concerns, there are general rules of thumb when it comes to tummy tuck scars.

During a full tummy tuck procedure, an incision will often be made low on the abdomen (near the pubic region), extending from hip to hip. As a result, any potential scarring can generally be concealed by bathing suits – including bikinis – and most underwear varieties. Likewise, the shorter incision typically employed during a mini tummy tuck can also be covered up by clothing in most instances. Additionally, for women who have undergone cesarean section, the scar from tummy tuck surgery can many times be incorporated into the existing scar.

In order to help reduce the appearance of scarring following abdominoplasty, it is important not to subject your incision to excessive force or tension during the healing process. By resting and limiting strain on your abdominal region, your scar should heal nicely and may not be as apparent. In the end, it might take as long as one to two years before your scar reaches its final appearance, so be sure to remain patient!
