Tummy Tuck and Pregnancy

pregnancy-tummy-tuck-reno-nvWomen interested in tummy tuck surgery often have many questions regarding pregnancy and the timing of their abdominoplasty. Two of the most common inquiries I typically hear from my patients are: “Is it okay to have tummy tuck surgery before having kids?” and “Are there any risks if I get pregnant after my abdominoplasty?”

While the answer to the first question depends on the unique individual and her particular circumstances for wanting the procedure, I generally recommend waiting until you are done having children before you undergo tummy tuck surgery. Reason being, getting pregnant and having kids after abdominoplasty will more than likely re-stretch the muscles and skin of your abdominal region, which can compromise the results of your original tummy tuck and may lead to a need for revision. Other than aesthetics, however, there are not typically any safety issues with having children after abdominoplasty, which leads into my answer for the second question.

For most patients, there are generally no serious risks associated with pregnancy after tummy tuck surgery. Other than the fact your abdominal skin and muscles will almost certainly stretch back out (as I previously mentioned), getting pregnant again should pose no concerns to your health or the health of your child. Should this be the case, however, it is important to note that another tummy tuck surgery may be necessary to restore the results achieved from your initial abdominoplasty procedure.
